Art Algarve 2009

Events and Programs — Director
Portimão, Faro e Loulé, 2009

GMG was invited by the Portuguese Government to direct the cultural programme Art Algarve 2009, titled “As Bright As The Sun”.

After two editions were commissioned by Serralves Foundation, GMG took on the role of director for the edition of 2009, inaugurated on June 19, having defined the theme of the project herself. She also curated the various international presentations of the programme and directed the work of the participating Portuguese institutions.

From photography to public art installations, the programme organised itself in eight main hubs, promoting cultural initiative in the Algarve by bringing together 160 works by 90 different artists. There were also several workshops, educational services and urban interventions, with municipal partnerships, in Faro, Loulé, Portimão and Silves. GMG invited the curators Maria de Corral and Lorena de Corral to commission one of the exhibitions, giving emphasis to the relationship of proximity with Spain.

It aimed to explore the region’s landscape and heritage through the lenses of contemporary art by setting activities and events in museums, convents and other unique sites of this southern region of Portugal. GMG organised several installations, a workshop, a film series and six exhibitions produced by outstanding Portuguese entities such as the Berardo Collection Museum, the Serralves Foundation and Culturgest.
