Designwise

It was during GMG’s second year as director that the Experimenta association embarked on the creation of a Portuguese design brand.

DESIGNWISE by Experimentadesign was a brand created by Experimenta that edited original objects and products designed by Portuguese designers. The DESIGNWISE collection, which also introduced the “Thought and Made in Portugal” label, was not specialized in or dedicated to specific categories of objects. Instead, its products spanned various scales and domains—covering different materials, uses, and price ranges.

Produced entirely in Portugal, DESIGNWISE was coordinated and artistically directed by Experimentadesign. Manufacturing involved collaborations with small and medium-sized industrial units, local artisans, and even a unique partnership with the Tires Prison Facility – Drug-Free Unit.

DESIGNWISE BY EXPERIMENTA was commercially available from November 2002 in various stores across Portugal, Spain, France, and Norway until the association no longer had the means to sustain its development. As part of its initiative, it also launched a design competition for Portuguese designers, students, and professionals—DESIGNWISE 0.2—and organized an exhibition bringing together Portuguese and Spanish design: “DESIGNWISE 0.2 vs Diseño Injuve 2003”, held at Palácio de Santa Catarina in Chiado, Lisbon.
